East Africa

Once again I have neglected this blog.  It is almost two years since my birding/biking trip to Japan/ Taiwan and my last entries.  Although my travels are getting less adventurous I am still getting around.    In the last two years I have been on trips in North America, often in search of new birds, and one trip with family to Norway and Sweden where I did get to see Muskox and some iconic birds.  These experiences will remain un-reported.

What brings me back to my blog is another trip, a bit more adventurous, with Rich King.  Tomorrow we will embark on a possibly painful four flight trip to Entebbe, Uganda.  For seven weeks we plan on travelling through parts of East Africa.  We have birding guides in Uganda and Ethiopia and will make our own way through parts of Kenya and Tanzania.

This is old stomping grounds for Rich but all new for me.  As an early adventure reader I was enthralled with the experiences of Livingston, Stanley, Speke others.  The romantic writing of Rider Haggard (King Solomon’s Mines), John Buchan and later Isak Dineson (Karen Blixen) and Beryl Markham, further created a desire to experience the “Heart of Africa”.  Strangely that has not happened before now.  I was in North Africa in the early 60’s and four times to southern Africa since 1985.  Better late than never.  If I had gone earlier it would certainly have been different than the trip we have planned, but I fully expect that you can still create adventure in your 80s.

I will make an effort to get some posts and photos out, but if they are slow in coming it means the adventure is too engrossing.

Onto Uganda
